A look back at what we achieved in RIIO-GD2
At the start of RIIO-GD2, we set out four priorities that we wanted to focus on through our innovation activity. Across the period, innovation has helped us make progress in each of these areas while supporting the transition to a smarter, greener and more customer-centric energy system.
1. Inform policy decisions on decarbonisation of the energy sector
We used our innovation funding to actively shape the UK's decarbonisation agenda, particularly around the future role of hydrogen.
Building on the H21 programme established in RIIO-GD1, we have completed more research and real-world trials to inform future policy and regulatory decision-making.
A flagship outcome was the creation of the Net Zero Research Village (NeRV), a dedicated whole-systems innovation testbed with capabilities that allowed us to explore the role of hydrogen in home heating amongst other heating options.
We also played a central role in the Health & Safety Executive's Comprehensive Formal Assessment (CFA) on the safety and technical factors around hydrogen, where we collaborated extensively with other gas distribution networks to build the case for the alternative energy source.
2. Improve the customer experience
We set out to deliver our core services in ways that are quicker, less intrusive and greener, with a particular focus on customers in vulnerable situations.
Projects like Open Maps introduced a more strategic approach to planning network works and disruption management, while the Vulnerability Impact Assessment tool and StreetScore initiatives helped us identify and better support customers who need it most.
Together, these efforts strengthened our customer-centric approach and contributed to measurable improvements in customer satisfaction scores and service delivery.
3. Keep bills affordable
We committed to using innovative technologies and processes to drive efficiency and reduce the cost of running our network.
The Intelligent Gas Grid and Internet of Things Pressure Sensors projects demonstrated how data-driven pressure management and automation can optimise network performance at lower cost.
Our Real Time Settlement Methodology project tackled the billing implications of integrating multiple gases into the network, ensuring a fair and equitable approach to cost allocation as the energy system evolves.
4. Improve the way we manage our network
Our ambition was to build a modern, data-driven organisation capable of evidence-based, predictive decision-making.
Much of this work centred on smart pressure control and automation.
Navigator, a planning tool developed in partnership with SGN, will help us make better decisions about where we need to invest on our path to net zero.
Our Control Room Automation work assessed systems and technologies to enhance our system control room capabilities, while the Lotus Notes Logbook Review identified the modern solutions needed to replace legacy systems built for a different era.
Collectively, these projects are helping NGN build a smarter, more resilient and technology-enabled network for the future
