About us

We are Northern Gas Networks (NGN), the gas distribution network for the North of England. Through our underground network of pipes, we keep gas flowing safely and reliably to 2.9 million homes and businesses every day.

About us

Our job is simple: deliver a safe, dependable and affordable gas service, while also preparing for a lower carbon future. That means working on new ideas and technologies that will help the energy system change in the years ahead.

We don’t do this alone. We work closely with the other GB energy networks, innovators, stakeholders and the communities we serve. Whether it’s keeping the network running smoothly, developing lower carbon solutions, or supporting customers who may need extra help to stay safe and warm, we focus on making a real difference where it matters most.

Innovation and collaboration drive everything we do. We’re always looking for better ways to do things, learning as we go, and improving the service we provide.

About this document

NGN receives funding from Ofgem, our regulator, which allows us to invest in innovation projects. These projects help us support the move towards net zero and tackle challenges faced by customers who may need extra support.

As part of the RIIO-GD2 price control period, we’ve used the NIA to trial, test and develop new ideas. This has helped us improve the services we provide, the way we work and the support we offer customers.

This document shares some of those projects and the impact they’re already having.
