Spotlight session Steve Dacre, Vulnerability Innovation Lead
Steve presented the Gas Networks Innovation Strategy 2026, outlining a coordinated, industry-wide approach to supporting the transition to a safe, reliable, and low-carbon energy system, while ensuring that customers, particularly those in vulnerable situations, remain protected. He emphasised that innovation is a key enabler in maintaining energy security, improving operational resilience, and delivering a fair and affordable transition to net zero.
Steve highlighted the continued importance of gas networks in supporting homes, businesses and industry throughout the transition, particularly in meeting peak demand and providing system flexibility. He also set out the need for closer integration across gas, electricity, and emerging low‑carbon technologies, supported by improved system planning and shared insights.
The strategy is underpinned by four key priorities:
- Maintaining safety and reliability through improved incident prevention and response
- Supporting a fair and coordinated energy transition aligned to whole-system planning
- Reducing environmental impact whilst maintaining secure supply
- Protecting vulnerable customers through targeted, accessible, and affordable support
Steve also highlighted the importance of cross-network and cross-sector collaboration in maximising value and avoiding duplication of effort. Delivery is supported through established funding mechanisms, including the Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) for early-stage and vulnerability-focused projects, and the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), which enables large-scale, transformational innovation. Learning and outputs are shared across the sector through public platforms and engagement activity to ensure transparency and continuous improvement.
He noted that the strategy is regularly refreshed to reflect emerging system needs and stakeholder feedback, ensuring it remains aligned with real-world challenges. Engagement with partners, community organisations and customers is integral to this process, supporting the development of innovation that delivers meaningful, practical outcomes.
Overall, Steve concluded that the Gas Networks Innovation Strategy 2026 provides a strong and collaborative framework to deliver innovation across the energy sector, supporting a safe, fair and efficient transition to net zero, while maintaining a clear focus on customer outcomes and inclusive service delivery.
