Spotlight session 1 John Hanna, Scope - What Inclusive Support Provision looks like from a client's perspective

John presented on who Scope are and shared some stats as follows: -

  • 1 in 4 of us in the UK are disabled, including 11% of children
  • On average, life costs an extra £1,095 per month when you’re disabled
  • Disabled people are almost twice as likely to be unemployed

John further went on to explain that a transformation of attitudes is required, and we MUST address the extra costs faced by those living with a disability. Those with disabilities need to be recognised for the value they bring to the workplace. An explanation of the social model of disability was provided and what is meant by transforming attitudes.

A case study was shared called Myles’ story, which provided an insight into the daily challenges experienced by Myles, due to his disability. He explained his lived experience of the impact of living in a cold home on his disability and how energy isn’t a luxury, but an essential item. Myles provided the following quote,” We deserve more than polite sympathy. We deserve action, fairness and a system that recognises our needs without making us fight for every bit of support.”
